Service Description

Trauma has been identified as an epidemic in our society. Studies indicate that a significant portion of the population have experienced harmful or life-threatening events which have impacted their everyday functioning or well-being. Research shows that individuals living in poverty or with a disability are even more at risk for having experienced trauma in their lives. In addition, the current global pandemic and nationwide social justice and civil rights movement are adding to the trauma felt by our communities—and students are just as susceptible to the impacts of trauma as anyone else. Through presentations, selected readings and multi-media sources, written activities, and discussions, this introductory course will examine trauma and its possible effects, and provide participants with ways to intervene harmful effects. The course will introduce how toxic stress can impact a child’s education. It will explore the key principles of a trauma-informed approach and how they apply in an educational setting. Participants will learn concrete tools to help students regulate their emotions; interrupt the “school-to-prison pipeline” through which students with disabilities and students of color experience disproportionate discipline; de-escalate situations when necessary; and help students build resilience. Participants will be expected to participate respectfully and openly, so that we can create a brave learning community, grounded in the course materials and learn how to support students to similarly share with courage and listen with empathy. The 15-hour course will start February 11, 2022 and be delivered remotely, asynchronously on-line, through Google Classroom. Participants work at their own time and pace, with instructor facilitation, and assignments due each week. In addition to weekly assignments, forum discussion is encouraged. NYC DOE TEACHER REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS: Step 1: To receive full CTLE and salary differential credit for this course you must register with ASPDP on their website. If you do not complete the ASPDP registration by the registration deadline, you will not be eligible for A+ or P credits towards your salary differential. If you have questions about using ASPDP courses towards the salary differential, please email ASPDP at ASPDP@schools.nyc.gov. Live Webinars: Participants joining a live webinar more than 15 minutes past the scheduled start time may not be admitted to the session. In order to be eligible for a refund, cancellations of live webinars must be received at least 48 hours in advance. Missed sessions or reservations cancelled within 48 hours may be rebooked for another day free of charge. Courses: In order to be eligible for a refund, cancellations of courses must be received prior to the start of the course. A credit, which may be used for other services or purchases from Cowart Trauma Informed Partnership, may be provided for enrollments cancelled after the course begins. NYC DOE Courses: Participants must attend the full session of the last day of the course. Participants joining more than 15 minutes past the scheduled start time may not be admitted to the session. If a participant must miss the session, he or she should reach out to the instructor as soon as it becomes evident, to discuss whether the absence may be made up at another time. In order to be eligible for a refund, cancellations of courses must be received prior to the start of the course. A credit, which may be used for other services or purchases from Cowart Trauma Informed Partnership, may be provided for enrollments cancelled after the course begins.
