Service Description

Marginalization is the exclusion of a disadvantaged person or group to the fringe of society. It results in individuals being overlooked when laws, policies, and practices are established that protect the privileged class, and leads to adverse community environments (such as poverty, poor housing, and lack of mobility) that promote fertile ground for structural violence and harm (such as racism and disproportionate child welfare removals). Children growing up in these environments are at risk for poor health and educational outcomes, the adoption of risky behaviors, and involvement with the child welfare and criminal justice systems. This course will help you develop a better understanding of marginalized students, and provide strategies grounded in a trauma-informed approach to help you support them in your classrooms, schools, and community. It will include a detailed look into the experiences of children from several marginalized communities, and offer techniques designed to help students feel safe, empowered, and able to focus on their educational opportunities. Specifically, the class will focus on supporting students with disabilities or special health needs, who are English language learners, new Americans, are experiencing homelessness, members of the LGBQT+ community, in foster care or who were adopted, or survivors of intimate partner violence or human trafficking. The course will also examine how intersectionality can compound the impact for individuals who belong to more than one marginalized group. This course is delivered through Google Classroom. Two sessions will be asynchronous (work at your own time and pace, with work due prior to each synchronous session), with instructor facilitation and forum discussion. Two sessions will be virtual, synchronous guided discussions on the dates below. A syllabus with the detailed class schedule will be shared upon registration. We will not meet on the 1st day. Cancelation Policy

Live Webinars: Participants joining a live webinar more than 15 minutes past the scheduled start time may not be admitted to the session. In order to be eligible for a refund, cancellations of live webinars must be received at least 48 hours in advance. Missed sessions or reservations cancelled within 48 hours may be rebooked for another day free of charge. Courses: In order to be eligible for a refund, cancellations of courses must be received prior to the start of the course. A credit, which may be used for other services or purchases from Cowart Trauma Informed Partnership, may be provided for enrollments cancelled after the course begins. NYC DOE Courses: Participants must attend the full session of the last day of the course. Participants joining more than 15 minutes past the scheduled start time may not be admitted to the session. If a participant must miss the session, he or she should reach out to the instructor as soon as it becomes evident, to discuss whether the absence may be made up at another time. In order to be eligible for a refund, cancellations of courses must be received prior to the start of the course. A credit, which may be used for other services or purchases from Cowart Trauma Informed Partnership, may be provided for enrollments cancelled after the course begins.
